A tense hours-long standoff in Woodbridge ended peacefully after a juvenile armed with kitchen knives was taken into custody following a mental health crisis call.
Police responded to a home on Abbottsbury Way after receiving reports involving a juvenile in distress. Officers initially encountered the teen near Potomac Club Parkway and Richmond Highway, but he fled on foot before eventually returning home.
When officers attempted to make contact inside the residence, the juvenile reportedly brandished two large kitchen knives and threatened officers. At one point, police said the teen held a knife to the throat of an adult family member. The family member was later safely evacuated.
Authorities evacuated nearby homes while negotiators and a social worker worked to de-escalate the situation. The juvenile eventually surrendered without further incident and was transported to a medical facility for evaluation.
The 16-year-old male from Woodbridge has been charged with attempted malicious wounding, abduction, and brandishing a knife.
