Prince William County police investigated a report of shots fired at the SomerHill Farms Apartments in the 7300 block of Yountville Drive in Gainesville.
According to police, officers responded to the apartment complex on September 24 and determined the gunfire had occurred at approximately 11 p.m. the previous night. Investigators determined an occupant of the complex was cleaning her firearm when it discharged.
The bullet struck the front door of the apartment and the ceiling of the breezeway. An officer later found the spent bullet on the breezeway floor near the apartment.
No injuries or additional property damage were reported.
Following the investigation, police charged 48-year-old Helena Rayzette Perkins of Gainesville with reckless handling of a firearm on September 24. She was released on a court summons, and her court date is pending.
