Prince William County police have arrested a Woodbridge man in connection with a shooting that occurred last month at a local shopping center.

Officers originally responded to the Market at Opitz Crossing shopping center in the 1900 block of Daniel Stuart Square around 6:30 p.m. on February 23 after receiving reports of gunfire. The investigation determined that an exchange of gunfire occurred in the parking lot between a 22-year-old man and another unidentified individual.

During the incident, the 22-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body and was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities later determined the injury was non-life-threatening. The second individual involved in the shooting left the scene and was not located.

Following the investigation, detectives obtained charges and arrested Jante Nathaniel Garey, 22, of Woodbridge on March 13.

Garey has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting in a public place, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. He is currently being held without bond while awaiting a court date.

Police say the incident does not appear to be random and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Prince William County Police Department tipline.
